11th January 1992 Day 175

The Diary
15 minute Greyhound to Byron Bay to sample the "bohemian hippie" lifestyle. Surfies everywhere. It was our first real sighting of proper surf and real surfing as seen on the TV. We did the Captain Cook walk through the trees, rainforest, around the lighthouse, to the most easterly point of the Australian coast, and back via Clarks beach.

Something in Byron

Despite slip, slop, slapping I still managed to burn my forehead. (Slip on a t-shirt, slop on sun tan oil and slap on a hat).

We were charged an extortionate $5 by the backpacker's hos-tell just to leave our bags for the day. Another pizza, the bus was late again and then off to Surfer's Paradise in the evening. Picked up at the bus stop yet again - if only inter-railing was this easy - and taken to a very modern, neat hos-tell. It even had an en-suite bathroom and fan to keep the room cool. Smashing.

Sun tan oil - nowadays I refer to it as sunscreen. Look here for why it's sunscreen.

Lennox Head to Byron - 20km
Byron to Surfer's - 104km
Total distance since Sydney - 1,004km
