The Diary
The first thing I did was to pack my gear and check into the room I paid for 6 months ago when I booked the Trans-Mongolian trip. Air-conditioning & a TV. Sheer bloody luxury. I then hopped on the MTR and zoomed to the ferry terminal on HK island.
I was there early and went through immigration & customs in a matter of minutes. I passed the time waiting for the jetfoil by having a hot dog. The jetfoil was quick, smooth and quiet, far superior to the hovercraft I caught to France in '88. Macau was just like an up-market Melaka with a few added casinos to give it just a hint of Monaco.
I didn't think it was really worth more than a day visit. All the sights are small, old, European churches and I've seen thousands of better ones in Europe. I think you need to do a bit of gambling to really appreciate it. And there are a couple of islands I didn't visit. It was a pleasant day out though and I bought a Macau 1999 t-shirt (as opposed to a HK 1997 t-shirt) and received lots of new stamps in the passport.
2012
A stamp for leaving HK, one for arriving in Macau, one for leaving Macau and another for arriving back in HK.
It's 15 years today since HK was handed to China. Take a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-18662668
