7th June 1992 Day 323

The Diary

A more relaxing 5-hour journey on an express bus to Jaipur. Clean, cooler (just), our bags in the boot not on the roof and only one stop at a government run transport stop so we could eat & drink. We even read the Sunday papers.

At Jaipur we had little trouble with the rickshaw mafia and arrived at the guest house of our choice. It was spotless and modern and we were very impressed. Well done, Neil, Sarah & Tony Wheeler. We lazed around, wrote letters, read & then went for food. On the way back we were accosted by a friendly rickshaw-wallah named Mohammed who had us read his letters, look at his photos and listen to his life story. He was determined to get his business without asking for it but we didn't oblige. Back at the Thita G.H. we talked with the owner about rickshaw mafia, the power of LP and the woes of the off season. It also rained a little bit today for the second day running.

Neil, Sarah & Tony Wheeler - who were Neil and Sarah?

This guest house was fantastic - the owners had fantastic pride in it and it was absolutely spotless. They'd been suffering for business because of the wording in the current India Lonely Planet which seemed to suggest that another local guest house was better. It's amazing what impact a badly worded sentence in LP had. It could have been make or break for this guest house despite all the effort they put in
