29th April 1992 Day 284

The Diary
We caught an air-con bust to Ayutthaya. The bus was late but we were given free drinks (with ice), a box that contained fried chicken, a lime and a bun and our ticket entitled us to a free meal and a 1B Coke at a restaurant stop. The bus had a video but the Thais seem obsessed with programmes that consist entirely of improbable 'Monkey'-style martial arts with lots of sticktwirling, back flips, flying through the air, karate kicks and punches. Abysmal.

We didn't quite arrive at Ayutthaya. The bus stopped in the middle of some roadworks and I decided to ask if we were near Ayutthaya. That was it. We were dropped off in the middle of nowhere. The ubiquitous 3-wheel samlor appeared and a quick bit of bargaining later we arrived at BJs guest house for 30B. The cheapest place yet - 80B - but it was bit bare and though it was clean it wasn't worth much more.

We went straight out and discovered Joe Cumming's map was as crap as ever. We had a good look around lots more ruins and it was like a sunny autumn afternoon in England - except it was probably 80F though. We walked around the rather depressing town looking for something to eat and we found an oasis amidst the desert. A wild west theme bar with a picture of the Alamo at San Antonio on the wall amongst all the other memorabilia and paraphernalia. The food was good too.

2012
Joe Cummings was the author of the Lonely Planet Thailand guide we were using. We thought it was full of mistakes - by far the worst LP we'd used - and the maps were always wrong.
