The Diary By this time our fine host and taxi-moke driver Graeme had got very friendly with Beth. And what's more he kept her separate from me and Oz in a room at the far side of the hos-tell. Aye aye - say no more.
We spent the day on the banks of the brown tannin-stained Lake Ainsworth and then we tried real boogie boarding in the surf. It's harder than it looks to catch the waves correctly but after quite a long time the score was Oz 4, Gaz 4 and Beth 1.
It must be said that Beth was a late starter and probably had the least of the swell. Ooh-err missus. Sideways glance.
Evening - pizza, VB in the pub while Bent Nails (a Willie Nelson, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia lookalike band) bent our eardrums with crap versions of all sorts of rubbish.
2012 Not too much to add. Just a normal day for backpackers on the NSW north coast.
The Diary Still raining. We hung around the hos-tel along with everyone else. The German girl in my room turned out to be French. She had lived in Munich but it was obvious my passive, listening German didn't extend to spotting accents. We got a lift to the bus stop - the coach was late but soon we were off. I don't know about a drought but vast areas of this part of the NSW coast seemed to be underwater. It got dark and rained. Cyclone Betsy was around somewhere and no doubt looking for us. We arrived in Lennox Head after stopping at the Big Prawn for a curry fest in Ballina. Went to the local pub to watch Double Identity doing covers of Pink Floyd and John Cougar Mellencamp.
2012 Hos-tel. I always pronounced it hostl but travellers seemed to pronounce it hos.....tell.
Coffs Harbour to Lennox Head - 220km. Total distance since Sydney - 880km
