9th January 1992 Day 173

The Diary
Still raining. We hung around the hos-tel along with everyone else. The German girl in my room turned out to be French. She had lived in Munich but it was obvious my passive, listening German didn't extend to spotting accents. We got a lift to the bus stop - the coach was late but soon we were off. I don't know about a drought but vast areas of this part of the NSW coast seemed to be underwater. It got dark and rained. Cyclone Betsy was around somewhere and no doubt looking for us. We arrived in Lennox Head after stopping at the Big Prawn for a curry fest in Ballina. Went to the local pub to watch Double Identity doing covers of Pink Floyd and John Cougar Mellencamp.

Hos-tel. I always pronounced it hostl but travellers seemed to pronounce it hos.....tell.
